Global Health opportunities with
other institutions and organizations
Global health has become an inextricable component of medical practice and scholarly endeavor. Demand is increasing for health professionals who can function competently in a global marketplace, who have research or service interests in health problems of resource-constrained setting, or who wish to address global manpower inequities through training or service. While the requirements of residency programs provide only so much flexibility for off-site rotations and content specialization, many residency programs at Vanderbilt have pathways that offer exposure to global health clinical and learning opportunities. Elements common to these include courses hosted by the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health, an International Journal Club, and research opportunities offered by many Vanderbilt investigators. Links to specific pathway descriptions and resources are provided above.
Global Health Courses
Traditional and online courses are available for Vanderbilt undergraduate seniors, medical students, nursing students, and graduate-level students in other programs, as well as Meharry Medical College students.
VIGH has also developed a series of online global health modules and educational resources. These modules provide an overview of important topics in global health such as HIV/AIDS, TB, Water & Sanitation, Non-communicable Diseases, Tropical Infectious Diseases, Nutrition in Low-resource Settings, Quality Improvement, and others.
As you prepare for an international rotation or other work abroad, you’ll find helpful information about international health insurance and travel safety on our preparing for departure webpage and useful information about cultural differences and global health ethics in our pre-departure modules.
International Journal Club
The Vanderbilt International Journal Club (VIJC) is a quarterly forum for faculty, residents, fellows, and medical students from all disciplines interested in international health care issues.
